Resident Artist Ify Chiejina on the Intricacies of Her Figurative Compositions

Ifeatuanya ‘Ify’ Chiejina is Raven Editions’ first artist-in-residence in almost three years. Born and raised in Queens, the Nigerian American artist is interested in the complexities of being brought up in an African household in western society.

Curlee Raven Holton talks about working with Faith Ringgold, and producing her most recent print Mama Can Sing, Papa Can Blow (2022) with ACA Galleries.

“I began working with Faith Ringgold in 1993 on our first edition, which we later completed in 1994. Since then, I have created over 40 editions with her. I am particularly proud of one edition, Mama Can Sing, Papa Can Blow (2022), which incorporates much of her blues and jazz inspiration. This diptych combines two separate pieces, which we created in 2004 and 2005.”

Raven Editions had the opportunity to travel to New York City for this year's Art on Paper fair, presented by Art Market Productions. We have chosen to highlight a selection of works exhibited at the fair that caught our eye. In this edition of Art on Paper, we found contemporary pieces that were driven by the medium and highlighted paper's visual and experimental aspects. The impressive curation of artists featured pieces that challenged preconceived conceptions of paper-based art.
